Enquire“Observāre” is the continuing visual attention to abstract forms by Vilas & Jin Sook Shinde, over the last four decades. Abstract forms which contrarily also have a deep structure within. This exercise requires an interpretative process where the visual grammar of an abstract work is transmitted into a ‘language’ which is constantly shifting semantic certitude. In the last few decades, expanded contexts of visual art production have also layered other language structures onto the known template of the modernist aesthetic even whilst centre-staging the ‘material’ as the prime element of this paradigm. In our case, both the artists attempt to recreate the poetics of dialogue within the material itself, very consciously introducing trajectories that intersect the utopian with experiential urgency impelled by personal pursuits of creative desires.
Although both artists had through their formative years undertaken an extensive exploration of the representational and figurative, their current abstractions are highly influenced by Nature. In conversation with Vilas, he said, “I have a natural feeling for every natural object”. Observing the trees, rocks, tall grasses and leafless bushes, he enjoys different moods for their beauty. Vilas Shinde, attempts to express his ecstatic absorption of nature. He is particularly interested in colour harmonies and focuses on individual tints that appear and re-appear in soothing repetition, creating an intuitive balance.
Conversely, Jin Sook’s poetics stems from the spontaneous expression of an inner impulse. Her subjects were her surroundings, the skies, animals, trees, flowers, human activities and portraits. Jin Sook’s works are not simply abstract variations of a landscape. Her recent work proves that she has begun experimenting with sculptures composed of paper, light, colour, and shadow. With these works, Jin Sook has moved beyond the boundaries of conventional abstraction, extending its desire and expressive possibilities.
